I'm sure the Mercury on the lifeboat would not start if they needed it.

Going back more than 50 years deckhand Piet Smit tugs Rotterdam.I did were gloves but we didn't have a life jacket or helmet in those days.The nearst I came to being killed when we picked up an incoming vessel outside Vlaardingen.We left our berth to late and the old man was in a rush.I threw the heaving line on the ships deck and I connected the line to our tugs hook.Got the line on let the old man know and he went full ahead.The towing rope snapped.As luck would have it the engineer stood next to me and threw me to the deck and we both went down.The rope would have taking our heads off it flew just over us.I was 16 still here at 73.lol.

The deputy harbor pilot is then sent to the port to be trained by the local member association. The DBPR and the Board oversee and approve port-specific training programs, monitor the deputy’s minimum two-year training, and when fully qualified and trained, they re-examine the deputy harbor pilot. Once this process is completed, the candidate can receive a state harbor pilot license. It is important to note that this profession requires a commitment from an individual who has a strong and dedicated work ethic and is willing to go through the necessary training and educational procedures to become a licensed harbor pilot. Recent successful candidates have indicated that they studied at least 1,000 hours to prepare for the exam, and few candidates are appointed on their first attempt - most sit for the exam more than once.

The vast majority of harbor pilots currently licensed by the State of Florida have graduated from a four-year federal or state maritime academy, which are equivalent to the nation’s military academies, demanding a high level of scholastic performance in a military environment. A graduate of one of these maritime academies earns a bachelor’s degree and a U.S. Coast Guard license as a deck officer-third mate unlimited. The recent graduate and newly licensed deck officer-third mate unlimited then leaves his or her family and goes to sea, serving on ocean-going vessels for 10 to 12 years, working his or her way up through increasing levels of responsibility, until the vast majority advance their license to an unlimited master and also sail in command of oceangoing ships.

The Texas A&M Maritime Academy is a highly specialized maritime training and education program embedded within Texas A&M University at Galveston. It is one of seven maritime academies in the United States and the only one located on the Gulf of Mexico. The mission of the Texas A&M Maritime Academy is to provide the maritime industries of the State of Texas and the United States with highly trained and professional U.S. Coast Guard licensed Merchant Officers (deck/engine) to serve on ocean-going and inland waterways vessels. Ese buque Frio Hellenic construio en mi ciudad en Ucranìa, en fin de 90s, recuerdolo zarpando por su primer viaje desde astilleros. Es unico de ese serie que esta navegando, el otro mismo quedo en astilleros hasta ahora, aun no estaba lanzado al agua. Partenece a una empresa Griega, donde navegaba mi papà casi quince años. La mayoria de tripulante siempre esta desde crimea.

Interesting video! I read your description above regarding the wind force and it looked like there was a moderate chop on the water when your pilot boat pulled up alongside the ship. It appeared to be a complex procedure and much skill is required to do the job that you do. I salute you, Captain!.... Do you still have the two crewboats? I would love to see a video of the 65-footer while underway at sea. --- John
